Domestic Abuse – Assess the Risk – Seek Professional Help
Domestic abuse takes many forms be it sexual abuse, verbal abuse, physical abuse, financial abuse, or psychological abuse. Basically, abuse is a method of controlling behaviors that result in the dominance of one partner over the other.
Anyone, anywhere, can be subject to domestic abuse. We focus on the intersection of gun violence with domestic abuse and the devastating results. Loopholes in federal and state laws still allow for abusers to obtain access to guns. We advocate for legislation that keeps firearms out of the hands of domestic abusers (red flag laws) and share with you the following facts:
- 1 million women have been shot or shot at by an intimate partner
(4x that amount have been threatened with guns) (everytown.org and everytownresearch.org) - On an average day, domestic abuse hotlines receive 20,000 calls (ncadv.org)
- Access to a gun makes it 5X more likely that the abusive partner will kill his female victim (everytown.org and everytownresearch.org)
- 2/3 of the women killed by an intimate partner are killed with a gun (everytown.org and everytownresearch.org)
- The deadly intersection of guns and domestic violence has a disproportionate impact on Black and Brown communities
