Too Many Loved Ones Are Missing!
June is a month of many happy occasions from high school and college graduations to weddings. And yet at many of these happy events, loved ones are missing from the festivities because they lost their lives to gun violence.
During June’s Gun Violence Awareness Month, we honor the memory of the lives lost by recognizing National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 6 and Wear Orange Weekend June 7th and 8th. Every day 125 people are shot and killed in the United States, along with hundreds more who are wounded . We remember those lost and ponder what their lives might have been, and what contributions they might have made to their families and to our country. We vow to take action to prevent these senseless losses.
Gun Violence Awareness Month and Wear Orange Weekend both began on June 2, 2015 , to honor Hadiya Pendleton’s birthday. Sadly, just one week after Hadiya proudly marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade in January of 2013, she was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago.
In the wake of this tragedy, Hadiya’s friends honored her memory by wearing orange (her favorite color) as well as the color worn by hunters in the woods for safety. Orange has long been associated with the gun violence prevention movement, and continues to symbolize efforts by national, state and grass-roots organizations to prevent gun violence and promote gun safety. We remain dedicated to this cause as we remember and honor the students lost at Columbine, Sandy Hook, Parkland, Uvalde along with the countless other victims of mass shootings that have occurred since then.
We urge you to recognize Wear Orange weekend in your
community by lighting the outside of your home or
business with orange light bulbs, using your social media
to make people aware of it and attending a vigil
or rally if there is one nearby.
