“Flooding the Zone”

ACLU Conversation

with Senator Chris Murphy and Joy Reid

Note: Some of our MA members have already seen this notice but there are a few new actions here as we launch this to Grandparents Uniting. This piece sums up our strategy of “Flooding the Zone” as we go forward.
Last week, we were privileged to attend a Zoom with the ACLU, Senator Chris Murphy and Joy Reid. We are including the recording link at the bottom of this piece. We encourage you to listen as it provides the inspiration and strategy we all need to pursue for our own causes, and the causes of others to be an effective force in gaining ground in our current situation.

In this Zoom, we hear what we know – that the current administration has “flooded the zone” trying to create chaos and inaction. You will hear how between the legal strategies that can be employed, the Congressional strength that is rising, the courts, corporations, and our citizenry, we can all “up the game” to create just as much NOISE and action thus leading to a more controlled outcome.

This takes place when we all do whatever we can every day to

make that NOISE….rallies, calls to our legislators, social media posts,

reposts of calls to action, town halls, letters to newspapers,

interviews, speaking engagements, doing the calls to action,

postcards, and involving yourself in other causes.

As of January, the US population was 347,276,000. if just 5% of that population committed to do a daily action, that would be 173,638 daily actions and that is a lot of NOISE; we know NOISE works in the gun violence prevention movement.

Grandparents Uniting for Gun Safety is committing to bring you

more actions as they become available in newsletters,

alerts and social media.

Be on the lookout and make your pledge to do

an action every day you can.

You’ll feel better and you can make a difference.

Raise the Age Action Item!

And here’s an action alert to do right now brought to us by our friends at the Newtown Action Alliance

HR 2368 The Raise the Age Act

Last Thursday, Congressman Glenn Ivey (D-MD), Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA), and Assistant Democratic Leader Joe Neguse (D-CO) reintroduced the Raise the Age Act to increase the age from 18 to 21 to purchase a semiautomatic rifle, the same legal age to purchase a handgun. The Raise the Age Act is a common-sense bill to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them and prevent young people from hurting themselves or others.

Too many lives have been lost to AR-15s in the hands of young shooters.

The Raise the Age Act is supported by 114 original cosponsors and is endorsed by Brady, Community Justice, Everytown for Gun Safety, GIFFORDS, and Newtown Action Alliance. Today we are calling on House members to act now to raise the minimum age and help prevent the next heart shattering tragedy.

Please call and get our MA Representatives to co-sponsor this act.

It should be a friendly call.

Script:

Hi, my name is _______________ I am a member of Grandparents Uniting for Gun Safety and am also calling for the Newtown Action Alliance.

I’m calling today because the Sandy Hook, Parkland, Uvalde, Buffalo, and Apalachee shootings were all carried out by gunmen under the age of 21 who legally purchased or acquired AR-15-style rifles.

I’m urging Representative_______ to co-sponsor a bill that has been reintroduced to raise the age from 18 to 21 for an individual to be able to purchase an assault rifle.

It is Congressman Glenn Ivey’s “Raise the Age Act” and the bill number is HR 2368.

Your office can become a co-sponsor of the Raise the Age Act by contacting Jackson Olesky in Congressman Ivey’s office.

His email address is:

JACKSONOLESKY at mail dot house dot gov and there is no dot between his first and last name.

Thank you.

US Congress Representatives that we need to call to co-sponsor:

Call your state first and if you can, call more…fine! States listed alphabetically. We listed them all to make it easier for you.

Here’s a Short Action Item – Ethan’s Law

Safe and Secure Firearm Storage

Ethan’s Law H.R.1564 – Due to everyone making calls, 15 new cosponsors have been added to the bill for a new total of 118 cosponsors! Thank you to everyone who put in the effort to contact lawmakers and urge them to support this bill. What an incredible result! We need more!

Ethan’s Law has nearly passed many times and now we need to build up the co-sponsors again. It is a federal safe storage law which could reduce gun deaths drastically.

Another Great Book on Gun Safety Policies

Gun Violence 101

A Graphic Guide to How Gun

Safety Policies Save Lives

Our friends and colleagues, Thomas Gabor and illustrator Violet Lemay have just released a new book , Gun Violence 101 – A Graphic Guide to How Gun Safety Policies Save Lives. A few of us had the pleasure of reading an advance copy and we were thrilled to see such a scholarly and accurate representation presented in such a user-friendly format.

This book was on “top” release lists in several categories even

before its release date. It has also been featured in American Educator, a publication of the American Federation of Teachers

with a circulation of close to one million.

https://www.aft.org/ae/spring2025/wwr

We encourage you to pick up a copy to read and share with your friends. This is especially a great resource for those of us who speak and write about gun violence prevention. Congratulations on another great rollout.

American Carnage

Shattering the Myths That Fuel Gun Violence

American Carnage is an earlier book written by Thomas Gabor and Fred Guttenberg and is another great resource book as well as being a great read for those wanting to know more about the origins of the situation we find ourselves in.
